What is a BaZi chart?
A BaZi chart turns your birth year, month, day and hour into four pillars of two characters each — a heavenly stem above an earthly branch. Those eight characters, and the five elements they carry, are what a reading is built on.
Are BaZi and Korean saju the same thing?
Yes. BaZi is the Chinese name and saju (四柱, “four pillars”) the Korean name for the same system — the same ten stems, twelve branches, five elements and calendar rules — so one birth moment gives the same eight characters in both. The differences are mostly in language and in the interpretive habits each tradition developed.
Why do the character names differ between BaZi and saju?
The characters are identical; only the readings differ. 甲 is Jia in Mandarin and Gap in Korean, and 子 is Zi in Mandarin and Ja in Korean. PAL:JA shows the characters themselves, so a chart reads the same in either tradition.
How does PAL:JA calculate a BaZi chart?
PAL:JA converts your birth time to true solar time — the sun’s actual position at your birthplace — using the longitude of 259 birthplaces across 196 countries and territories. It applies the daylight-saving rules in force where and when you were born, and sets the month pillar by the solar terms, as BaZi requires.
Why does true solar time matter in BaZi?
The hour pillar changes every two hours, so a birth near a boundary can land in a different pillar depending on how the time is corrected. Clock time is often far from the sun’s — in Singapore, for example, clock time runs about an hour ahead of the sun.
What does the BaZi calculator show?
Your free chart shows all eight characters, your Day Master and your five-element balance. Your ten-year luck pillars (大運, Da Yun — daeun in Korean) are mapped in a separate Luck Cycles reading for 1 bok.
What is the Day Master in a BaZi chart?
The Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar, the character that represents you. There are ten — a yang and a yin form of each element — and each has its own guide on PAL:JA.
What are luck pillars (Da Yun)?
Luck pillars are ten-year stretches that begin at an age set by your birth moment and move forward or backward through the cycle of sixty stem-branch pairs. They describe the background tendencies of each decade, read against your chart, rather than events.
Do I need my exact birth time for BaZi?
No. Without it, PAL:JA reads the six characters of your year, month and day pillars, including your Day Master, and leaves the hour pillar out rather than guessing. Near a solar-term boundary, the start age of your luck pillars becomes an estimate too.

Is this BaZi calculator free?
Yes. The eight characters, Day Master and five-element balance are free; longer written readings are optional.
Why does the calculator ask for gender?
Only to set the direction of your luck pillars, as the traditional method requires. It does not change your eight characters.
Do I need to convert my birthday to the lunar calendar?
No. You enter your birth date in the ordinary (Gregorian) calendar, and the pillars are set by the solar terms, as BaZi requires — no lunar conversion needed.
