What Is a Day Master? The One Character Koreans Read as You

Ask a Korean saju reader where they begin, and most will point to one character in your chart. It isn’t your zodiac animal or your birth year — it is the Day Master.

What is a Day Master?

The Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar — the top character of the pillar for the day you were born. In saju, it is the character read as you, and the other seven characters are read by how they relate to it.

Why is the Day Master read as you?

Saju treats the four pillars like concentric circles around a person: the year for background and generation, the month for the environment you grew up in, the day for yourself, and the hour for what comes after. The day pillar’s stem sits at the centre of that picture, so readers start there.

Every other character is described in relation to it — as something that feeds it, something it feeds, something that checks it, and so on. That is why two charts with the same zodiac animal can read very differently.

What are the ten Day Masters?

There are ten, a yang and a yin form of each of the five elements: Yang Wood (甲), Yin Wood (乙), Yang Fire (丙), Yin Fire (丁), Yang Earth (戊), Yin Earth (己), Yang Metal (庚), Yin Metal (辛), Yang Water (壬) and Yin Water (癸). Yang forms tend to be outward and steady; yin forms tend to be inward and adaptable.

• Wood: 甲 like a tall tree, 乙 like a vine or wildflower.
• Fire: 丙 like the sun, 丁 like candlelight.
• Earth: 戊 like a mountain, 己 like garden soil.
• Metal: 庚 like raw metal or a sword, 辛 like a polished jewel.
• Water: 壬 like the ocean, 癸 like morning dew.

How do I find my Day Master?

Your Day Master comes from your day pillar, so your birth date is enough to find it. Adding your birth time and birthplace completes the other pillars, corrected to true solar time.

Is the Day Master the same as my zodiac animal?

No. Your zodiac animal is the earthly branch of your year pillar; your Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar. Both are among your eight characters, but saju reads the Day Master as you and the year animal as background.

Does my Day Master decide my personality?

No. The Day Master describes a tendency, and the other seven characters shape how it shows up. Two people with the same Day Master can come across very differently, depending on the rest of their charts.

What does a strong or weak Day Master mean?

It describes how much support the Day Master gets from the rest of the chart — how many characters feed it or share its element. It isn’t a judgement; a chart with a strong Day Master and one with a weak Day Master simply lean on different elements.
