Water and Fire Compatibility in Korean Saju: Ocean, Morning Dew, Sun and Candlelight
· PAL:JA
Water puts out fire. So in Korean saju, is a water person and a fire person a bad match?
Not necessarily. Saju has two water types and two fire types, and the four possible pairings behave very differently. One is the textbook clash. One is one of the five classic "combination" pairs that Korean readers love to see in a couple. Here is how each one works.
What is a Day Master?
Your saju is built from eight characters taken from your birth year, month, day and hour. The most important one is the top character of your day pillar, called your Day Master. It is your core type, and there are ten of them.
Two of the ten are water and two are fire:
- Ocean 壬 (yang water): big, restless, always moving
- Morning Dew 癸 (yin water): quiet, perceptive, soaks into everything
- Sun 丙 (yang fire): warm, loud, shines on everyone at once
- Candlelight 丁 (yin fire): focused, intimate, lights one room very well

What does "water controls fire" mean in saju?
In the five-element cycle, water controls fire. That sounds one-sided, but in saju "control" is not the same as "harm".
- If you are fire, water is the element that gives you structure and pressure. It is the energy of rules, responsibility and being taken seriously.
- If you are water, fire is the element you control, which saju reads as what you pursue and manage: money, results and, traditionally, the person you chase.
So a water and fire couple often looks like this: the water partner drives, the fire partner feels pushed. Whether that feels like support or like being put out depends on which exact pair you are.
Why are Ocean 壬 and Sun 丙 the classic clash?
This is the pair saju books use as the example of a clash between two Day Masters. Both are yang, both are big, and both want to fill the whole room. The ocean wants to keep moving, and the sun wants to be the center.
What it looks like in real life:
- Strong attraction at the start, because each one is the most visible thing the other has seen.
- Arguments that are loud, fast and over quickly.
- Trouble when both want to lead the same project, trip or friend group.
What helps: separate territory. Couples with this pair do better when each has an area the other does not manage.
The upside people forget: a clash also means movement. This pairing rarely gets boring.
Why are Ocean 壬 and Candlelight 丁 a natural pair?
This is the surprise. Ocean and Candlelight form one of saju's five classic combinations (丁壬). In a combination, two characters pull toward each other instead of pushing apart, and together they create a third element, wood, which is growth.
What it looks like:
- The ocean brings range and big plans. The candle brings focus and warmth.
- They tend to soften each other rather than compete.
- Korean readers often point to this kind of combination as a sign of strong romantic pull.
Same elements as the clash above, opposite result. This is why "water and fire don't mix" is too simple.
What happens between Morning Dew 癸 and Candlelight 丁?
Both are yin, so this clash (丁癸) is subtler than Ocean and Sun. It shows up as small frictions rather than big fights: one person withdraws, the other feels their light being dimmed. Neither raises their voice, but both keep score.
What helps: saying things out loud early. This pair's problems come from what goes unsaid.
Why are Morning Dew 癸 and Sun 丙 like clouds over the sun?
There is no direct clash or combination between these two. The relationship is shaped by the basic rule, water controlling fire, in its gentlest form. Traditional readers describe this image as clouds passing over the sun: the dew can quietly cool the sun's mood without ever starting a fight.
What it looks like: a calm pair on the outside, where the sun partner sometimes feels unseen. It works best when the dew partner says out loud what they appreciate.
Is a Day Master match the whole story?
No. Your Day Master is only one character out of eight, and a Day Master match is the headline, not the whole story. A real compatibility reading also looks at:
- the other seven characters in both charts,
- how your month and day branches interact,
- and which ten-year luck cycle each of you is in right now.
Two people with the "classic clash" can have charts that balance each other perfectly once everything else is counted. That is why a reading should look at both full charts together.
How can we read our charts together?
PAL:JA calculates both charts with fixed saju rules first, adjusted to the real sun time in the city each of you was born, and then explains them in plain English.
With Read us together, you send your partner or friend an invite link. You both join the same room, and your compatibility is read with both of you there. Try it at getpalja.com/compat.
Are water and fire compatible in Korean saju?
It depends on which water and which fire. Ocean 壬 and Candlelight 丁 form a classic combination and are usually a strong match. Ocean 壬 and Sun 丙 are the textbook clash, and Morning Dew 癸 pairs fall in between.
What is the worst Day Master match for fire?
There is no single worst match. Clashes (Ocean with Sun, Morning Dew with Candlelight) bring the most friction, but friction is not the same as incompatibility. The full chart decides.
How do I find my Day Master?
It comes from the day you were born, counted in the 60-day cycle that saju uses. Enter your birth date, time and city at getpalja.com to get it free.
