2026 Fire Horse Year: What It Means in Saju

In saju, 2026 is 丙午 (byeong-o), the Fire Horse year: yang fire sitting on top of the Horse, which is also fire. That makes it a double-fire year, traditionally read as fast, bright, loud and restless. The saju year began at ipchun, early on February 4, 2026, not on January 1.

Fire Horse years come around once every 60 years. The last one was 1966, and the next one is 2086. Here is what the two characters mean, when the year really starts, and how tradition says each saju type tends to feel a year with this much fire in it.

What does 丙午 mean?

丙午 is the name of the year written as a pair of characters: a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. A heavenly stem is one of ten characters that carry an element in a yang or yin form, and an earthly branch is one of twelve characters, the ones linked to the zodiac animals.

  • 丙 (byeong) is yang fire. Its nickname in saju is the Sun: open, warm, visible, shining on everyone at once.
  • 午 (o) is the Horse. Its element is also fire, and it is linked to midsummer and the middle of the day.

Put them together and you get fire over fire. Most years mix two different elements, for example 2025, which was 乙巳, wood over a fire Snake. In 2026 both halves of the year pillar point the same way. In Korea the year is widely called 붉은 말의 해, "the year of the red horse", because the color tied to fire is red.

The pair repeats every 60 years because saju counts time in a 60-step cycle: ten stems and twelve branches move forward together, and the same combination only returns after 60 steps. That is why the Fire Horse years run 1906, 1966, 2026 and 2086.

When does the Fire Horse year start and end in saju?

The saju year of 2026 started at ipchun, around 5 a.m. on February 4, 2026, Korea time (20:02 UTC on February 3). Ipchun (입춘) is the solar term called "start of spring", the moment the sun reaches 315 degrees along its yearly path.

It does not follow January 1 or Lunar New Year, which fell on February 17 in 2026. The Fire Horse year runs until the next ipchun, in early February 2027, when 丁未 (the Fire Goat) begins.

This matters most for people born in the first weeks of 2026:

Born in 2026Calendar yearLunar New Year viewSaju year
January 1 to February 32026Snake (before Feb 17)乙巳, Wood Snake
February 4 (after ipchun) to February 162026Snake (before Feb 17)丙午, Fire Horse
February 17 onward2026Horse丙午, Fire Horse

So a baby born on January 20, 2026 is a Snake in saju, even though the birth certificate says 2026. If you or someone you know was born near the start of a year, our guide Born in Early February? What does a 2026 baby's chart look like?

Here is a worked example with two made-up birthdays a few weeks apart. Both babies were born in Seoul in 2026, and we leave out the birth hour to keep it simple.

PillarBorn January 20, 2026Born February 10, 2026
Year乙巳 Wood Snake丙午 Fire Horse
Month己丑 Earth Ox庚寅 Metal Tiger
Day甲午乙卯
Saju type甲 Big Tree乙 Wildflower

Three weeks apart, and every pillar is different. The January baby has a Snake year and a winter month. The February baby crossed ipchun, so the year pillar, the month pillar and the season all changed. Notice also that the year animal is only one character out of eight. The top character of the day pillar is each child's saju type, which saju experts call the Day Master. That type usually says more about a person than the year animal does. Our guide to saju types explains why.

Why is the Fire Horse year famous in Japan?

Because of a superstition that caused a real drop in births. In Japan the Fire Horse year is called hinoeuma, and an old folk belief held that girls born in that year would grow up headstrong and be a danger to their husbands.

In 1966, the last Fire Horse year, births in Japan fell by roughly a quarter, and the fertility rate dropped from around 2 children per woman to about 1.6. It became a year many families avoided for births, and demographers still point to the 1966 notch in Japan's population pyramid.

Korean saju does not read a Fire Horse birth as a bad sign for anyone, girls included. In saju, no year is good or bad on its own. What matters is how the year's elements meet the elements in your own chart.

How does a double-fire year feel for each saju type?

Each saju type relates to fire in a different way, so the same year feels different depending on your type. The table below shows the traditional reading of a strong fire year for each element.

Treat it as how saju describes the mood of the year, not a forecast of events. Your full chart, including your 10-year luck cycle, changes the picture a lot.

Your saju typeHow fire relates to youWhat tradition says a double-fire year tends to bring
Wood: 甲 Big Tree, 乙 WildflowerWood feeds fire, so fire is what you put outExpression, creative output, being busy and visible; watch for burnout
Fire: 丙 Sun, 丁 CandlelightFire is your own elementConfidence, independence, more peers and more competition; easy to overheat
Earth: 戊 Mountain, 己 Garden SoilFire makes earth, so fire supports youSupport, learning, mentors and recharging; risk of waiting too long to act
Metal: 庚 Sword, 辛 JewelFire shapes and controls metalPressure and responsibility, but also structure, titles and being tested
Water: 壬 Ocean, 癸 Morning DewWater controls fire, so fire is what you chaseOpportunities, money and goals to pursue; feeling stretched thin

A few things change this picture. A chart that is short on fire often welcomes a fire year, while a chart that already has a lot of fire may feel crowded by it. The 10-year luck cycle (daeun, the decade-long "weather" in a saju chart) can soften or amplify the year. And Morning Dew 癸 and Ocean 壬 do not feel fire the same way, even though both are water.

Does everyone feel the Fire Horse year as "fiery"?

No. The year's fire is a background condition, like a hot summer. Some people thrive in heat and some need shade.

How do Koreans mark the start of the saju year?

Many Koreans still mark ipchun with a short written wish on the door. The custom is called ipchunchup: two phrases, 立春大吉 ("great happiness as spring begins") and 建陽多慶 ("as the bright energy rises, may there be many joys"), are written on paper and posted on a door or pillar. It goes back at least to the Joseon dynasty, when officials wrote spring verses for the palace.

At the same time, Korean news headlines greeted the "year of the red horse" on January 1. Everyday Korea uses several calendars at once; saju just picks the solar one. For the bigger picture, see what saju is and how it works, or walk through a full chart in How to Read a Saju Chart, Step by Step.

Is 2026 a bad year to have a baby?

No. Saju does not treat any birth year as a bad year to be born. The Japanese hinoeuma belief is a folk superstition, and a child's saju depends on all eight characters, not the year animal.

I was born in 1966. Is 2026 special for me?

Yes, in a traditional sense. If you were born after ipchun in 1966, 2026 is the year you turn 60 and your birth year pillar 丙午 returns. In Korea, completing a full 60-year cycle is the idea behind hwangap, the 60th birthday celebration.

What year comes after the Fire Horse?

丁未, the Fire Goat, starting at ipchun in early February 2027. It is still a fire year, but in a softer yin form over the earth-element Goat.
