Things to Do in Seoul for Couples: Dates and Korean Astrology

· PAL:JA

Saju is Korean astrology: a birth chart read from the year, month, day and hour you were born. The best things to do in Seoul for couples mix old and new: a hanbok walk through a palace, love locks on Namsan, a picnic and night cruise on the Han River, and a strip of photos from a self-photo booth. For a truly Korean couple ritual, add a gunghap reading, where a saju reader compares both your charts at a saju cafe.

This guide is written by Koreans who build a saju app. It covers where to go, how to get there by subway, a one-day itinerary, the couple customs you see everywhere, and how to fit a compatibility reading into your trip.

What are the best things to do in Seoul for couples?

The classic things to do in Seoul for couples are a hanbok palace walk, the love locks at N Seoul Tower, a Han River evening and a photo booth session. A gunghap reading at a saju cafe is the one most visitors miss, and it is the most Korean of them all.

Here is the short list, roughly in the order a day flows:

  • Hanbok at Gyeongbokgung. Rent traditional Korean clothes near the palace and walk the courtyards together.
  • Bukchon and Ikseon-dong. Wander lanes of hanok, traditional Korean houses, in the old center of the city.
  • A gunghap reading. Sit down at a saju cafe and have a reader compare your two charts.
  • Namsan and N Seoul Tower. Ride up the mountain in the middle of Seoul and add a padlock to the fences.
  • The Han River. Picnic on the grass in a riverside park, then take an evening cruise.
  • A photo booth. End the night with a four-frame photo strip and silly props.

Seoul's subway reaches all of these. Get a T-money card at a convenience store or station machine, tap in and out, and the same card works on buses.

What does a one-day couple itinerary in Seoul look like?

Start in the palace district in the morning, move south to Namsan in the late afternoon, and finish by the river at night. The table below is a relaxed plan that keeps the subway rides short.

TimeStopNearest subwayCouple tip
MorningHanbok rental and GyeongbokgungGyeongbokgung station, Line 3Entry is free in traditional hanbok (costume-style outfits may not count)
Late morningBukchon Hanok VillageAnguk station, Line 3People live here, so keep voices low
Lunch and early afternoonIkseon-dong lanes and a saju cafeJongno 3-ga station, Lines 1, 3 and 5Book the gunghap reading at least 3 days ahead
Late afternoonNamsan and N Seoul TowerMyeongdong station, Line 4Take the cable car up for the view at sunset
EveningYeouido Hangang Park and a river cruiseYeouinaru station, Line 5Order fried chicken to the park, a very Seoul date

If you have two days, split it: palaces, Bukchon and the saju cafe on day one, then Namsan, the river and Hongdae on day two. Seongsu, with its warehouse cafes and Seoul Forest, is a good swap for Hongdae if you prefer a calmer evening.

Where are the love locks on Namsan?

The love locks are at N Seoul Tower, at the top of Namsan, the mountain in the middle of Seoul. Couples write their names on a padlock, lock it to the fences around the tower's terraces, and keep or throw away the key.

You can walk up from Myeongdong on paved paths, which takes a steady climb, or ride the Namsan cable car for most of the way. The view over the city is best around sunset, when the lights come on. Write your names before you go up, and bring a marker that works on metal.

How do you plan a Han River date?

Pick a riverside park, bring a mat and snacks, and stay for the evening lights. Yeouido Hangang Park is the easiest choice for a first visit, and river cruises leave from Yeouido.

The Han River parks are where Seoul couples go on warm evenings. A few local habits:

  • Delivery to the grass. Ordering fried chicken to the park is a Seoul tradition. Delivery riders meet you at the park's marked pickup spots.
  • Convenience store ramyeon. Riverside convenience stores have machines that cook instant noodles in a paper bowl.
  • The fountain. Banpo Bridge has a rainbow fountain that runs several times each evening from spring to October, weather permitting; Banpo Hangang Park is the place to watch it.
  • A night cruise. A boat ride from Yeouido shows the bridges lit up from the water.

Bring a light jacket in spring and autumn, because the wind off the river gets cool after dark.

Is a hanbok palace walk worth it for couples?

Yes, it is one of the most popular couple activities in Seoul. Hanbok rental shops around Gyeongbokgung dress you both, and entry to the city's main palaces is free when you wear traditional hanbok, though some costume-style outfits do not count.

Gyeongbokgung is the largest of Seoul's five grand palaces, with the changing of the royal guard at Gwanghwamun gate. Changdeokgung, nearby, has quieter grounds. From either palace it is a short walk into Bukchon Hanok Village. Bukchon is a living neighborhood, and parts of it limit tourist visits to daytime hours, so plan it for the morning or early afternoon and keep the volume down.

What is couple culture like in Korea?

Korean couple culture is visible and playful: matching outfits, couple rings, and anniversaries counted by days. It shows up on every street, so it helps to know what you are looking at.

  • Couple rings. Many couples wear matching rings well before any engagement, often from around their 100-day anniversary.
  • Counting days. Couples mark 100 days, 200 days and 1 year together, and apps count the days for them.
  • Matching looks. Couple T-shirts, sneakers and phone cases are common, especially on dates.
  • Photo booths. Self-photo studios with four-frame strips are everywhere, and couples keep the strips in their phone cases.
  • Couple days. Valentine's Day is on 14 February, and White Day on 14 March is when the gift goes the other way.

Joining in is part of the fun. A matching ring or a photo strip makes a small, easy souvenir.

What is a gunghap reading at a saju cafe?

A gunghap (宮合) reading is a compatibility reading where a saju reader compares two people's birth charts. In Korea couples do it for fun on dates and, more seriously, families have long looked at it before a marriage.

Saju is the Korean system of reading personality and timing from your birth year, month, day and hour, also known as the Four Pillars or BaZi. A saju cafe is a small cafe or consultation room where you order a drink and the reader talks you through your chart at the table. Our saju cafe guide covers what happens at the table and what to say.

At a gunghap reading, the reader starts with the two of you as a pair: which elements each of you has, whether your saju types pull toward each other or push against each other, and how your branches meet. Your saju type is the top character of your day pillar, one of ten, and saju experts call it your Day Master.

Find both of your saju types before the trip. It takes a minute, it is free with no sign-up on the saju type page, and it makes the reader's terms much easier to follow.

How do two made-up birthdays read as a couple?

Here is a short worked example, calculated with fixed saju rules. Min, born 4 November 1998, has the day pillar 乙卯, so Min is a Wildflower 乙; Dani, born 13 April 1996, has 庚辰, so Dani is a Sword 庚.

Wildflower 乙 and Sword 庚 form one of the five classic stem combinations (乙庚), a pair that saju reads as drawn to each other. The sword brings direction and the wildflower brings tact. A reader would then check the other characters in both charts, because the saju type is one character out of eight. How do you book a couple saju reading in Seoul?

Use the saju cafe map on PAL:JA, which lists 71 saju cafes in Myeongdong, Hongdae, Seongsu, Gangnam, Ikseon-dong and Busan. For many of them you can send a booking request, and we call the cafe in Korean for you.

How it works:

  • Request at least 3 days ahead. Pick a date and time on the cafe's page; the request needs a Google or Apple sign-in.
  • We call in Korean. We contact you by the method you choose once the cafe confirms your time.
  • You pay the cafe. PAL:JA charges nothing for the booking call, and you pay the cafe directly for the reading.
  • Confirm or cancel. Tap "I'm coming" or Cancel in My bookings by 24 hours before, or the booking is cancelled automatically.

For the Ikseon-dong stop in the itinerary, filter the map by area and pick one nearby. If your reader speaks only Korean, the Cafe Translator is a two-way interpreter built for saju readings, paid by the hour.

You can also do a quick check before you go. On the compatibility page, enter both birthdays to see your compatibility score for free. We calculate both charts with fixed saju rules, adjusted to the real sun time in each birth city, and the full reading is paid.

When is the best season for a couple trip to Seoul?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking dates. Cherry blossoms usually bloom in early April, and autumn leaves color the palaces and Namsan from late October into November.

Do you need to speak Korean at a saju cafe?

No, but plan for a Korean-only reading unless the cafe clearly offers English. Knowing your saju types beforehand and using a saju-aware interpreter helps a lot.

Is a gunghap reading serious in Korea?

For most couples it is a fun date and a talking point, not a verdict. Saju describes tendencies, and every pairing can work when both people know where they differ. If one result surprises you, the water and fire pairs in our water and fire compatibility guide show how readers balance a match.
