Wood Element Personality in Saju: Big Tree vs Wildflower

In Korean saju, the wood element personality is about growth: steady, forward-looking and hard to stop. Saju splits wood into two types. Big Tree 甲 grows straight up, stands its ground and leads. Wildflower 乙 bends, adapts and finds a way through any gap.

Same element, very different people. Here is how to tell them apart.

What is the wood element personality in saju?

Wood is one of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) that saju uses to describe everything in a chart, and it stands for growth, planning and moving forward. Saju is the Korean system of reading your personality and timing from your birth year, month, day and hour. If saju is new to you, start with our guide to what saju is.

Your wood-ness matters most when wood is your saju type. Your saju type is the character for the day you were born, one of ten, and it describes your core self (your saju type, which saju experts call your Day Master). Two of the ten types are wood:

  • Big Tree 甲 is yang wood. Yang is the outward, direct side of an element.
  • Wildflower 乙 is yin wood. Yin is the inward, flexible side of an element.

You can read more about how the ten types work in what a Day Master is, or see all ten saju types.

How are Big Tree and Wildflower different?

Big Tree grows by standing still and rising; Wildflower grows by moving sideways and adapting. A tall tree cannot step out of the way of a storm, so it relies on strength. A wildflower survives the same storm by bending flat and standing back up.

What is a Big Tree 甲 person like?

A Big Tree person is upright, direct and built to lead. People tend to trust them early because they say what they mean and stay where they said they would be.

Strengths:

  • A strong sense of right and wrong, and the backbone to act on it.
  • Protective of the people under their branches: team members, younger siblings, friends.
  • Long-term thinking. A tree plans in years, not weeks.

Blind spots:

  • Bending is hard. A Big Tree would rather break than admit a plan was wrong.
  • Pride can make it hard to ask for help.
  • They may grow so tall that they forget to check who is in their shade.

At work, Big Tree people do best with a title or a territory that is clearly theirs. They are strong founders, team leads and anyone who has to hold a line under pressure. They struggle in roles that change direction every week.

In love, a Big Tree partner is loyal and dependable. The friction usually comes from rigidity: they have a picture of how things should go and find it hard to change it. The full Big Tree 甲 guide goes deeper.

What is a Wildflower 乙 person like?

A Wildflower person is adaptable, perceptive and harder to stop than they look. They rarely force their way through a problem; they find the route around it.

Strengths:

  • Reads people and rooms quickly, and adjusts.
  • Survives setbacks well. Cut a wildflower down and it grows back.
  • Builds wide networks, because they know how to lean on others and let others lean on them.

Blind spots:

  • Avoiding open conflict can turn into saying yes when they mean no.
  • They can tie their growth too closely to one person or group.
  • Many small worries can add up to overthinking.

Classical saju texts describe yin wood as a vine that can climb a tall tree, which is why Wildflower people often grow fastest with a strong mentor, partner or team beside them. At work, they shine in roles that need tact: design, sales, hospitality, teaching and anything that depends on relationships.

In love, Wildflower partners are warm and attentive. The risk is losing themselves in the relationship, so they do best with a partner who gives them room to grow on their own as well.

By publicly listed birthdays, the K-stars we list as Wildflower 乙 on our site include J-Hope, G-Dragon and Park Seo-joon. The full Wildflower 乙 guide has more.

Which elements support or drain wood?

Water supports wood, fire drains it, and metal controls it. Saju explains this with two cycles: in one, each element feeds the next; in the other, each element keeps another in check.

ElementIts effect on woodWhat it means for Big Tree and Wildflower
WaterFeeds woodLearning, rest, support from mentors and family
WoodSame elementFriends, peers and rivals who are like you
FireWood feeds fire, so it drains woodSelf-expression, creating, talking, performing
EarthWood controls earth, which takes effortMoney, results and the things you manage
MetalMetal controls woodRules, pressure, responsibility and reputation

Draining is not bad. A tree that never makes leaves or fruit is not doing its job. The question in a real chart is balance: a wood person with a lot of fire around them may feel tired and over-committed, and one with a lot of water may think and plan a great deal but act slowly.

Can two people born one day apart be different wood types?

Yes. Your saju type changes every day, so two people born a day apart usually have different types. Here is a worked example with two made-up birthdays, calculated with fixed saju rules.

  • Minji: born May 17, 1996, 2:00 pm, Seoul
  • Joon: born May 18, 1996, 2:00 pm, Seoul
PillarMinjiJoon
Year丙子丙子
Month癸巳癸巳
Day甲寅 (Big Tree)乙卯 (Wildflower)
Hour辛未癸未

A pillar is one pair of characters, a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below, for each of your year, month, day and hour. Both share the same year and month, but Minji is a Big Tree and Joon is a Wildflower. To read a whole chart like this one, see how to read a saju chart.

A few more things the chart shows:

  • Both day branches are wood too (寅 and 卯), so both are wood types with strong roots.
  • Both were born in the 巳 month, early summer, when fire is strong. Fire drains wood, so both charts lean toward expressing and doing, and both benefit from the water (子 in the year, 癸 in the month) that feeds them.
  • 2:00 pm in Seoul is about 1:30 pm in real sun time, because Seoul sits west of the line Korean clocks are set to. That still falls in the 未 hour (1 pm to 3 pm). For a birth near the edge of an hour, this correction can change the hour pillar.

What do Koreans think of when they hear 甲 and 乙?

In everyday Korean, gap 甲 and eul 乙 mean "the stronger party" and "the weaker party". Korean contracts label the two sides gap and eul, the first two heavenly stems, and the phrase "gap-eul relationship" now describes any unequal power relationship, such as a big company and its subcontractor.

Saju does not read it that way. A Wildflower is not weaker than a Big Tree; it simply grows in a different way. In saju, gap and eul are simply the first two of the ten types, yang wood and yin wood.

Is wood a good element to have in saju?

No element is good or bad on its own. Wood brings growth and drive, but a chart with too much wood can feel restless or stubborn, and one with too little may lack direction. Balance across the whole chart matters more than any single element.

Which type is most compatible with wood?

Big Tree combines with Garden Soil 己, and Wildflower combines with Sword 庚. A combination is a pair of heavenly stems that pull toward each other, and these are two of the five classic pairs. Real compatibility still depends on both full charts.

Can my saju type change during my life?

No, your saju type is fixed by your birthday. What changes is the timing: saju reads ten-year luck cycles and yearly energy that bring out different sides of the same type over time.
