Saju Money: Are You a Trader or a Holder?

· PAL:JA

อ่านบทความนี้เป็นภาษาไทย

Your saju money style comes from your wealth element: the element your saju type controls. It comes in two styles. Trader money (편재, 偏財) is windfalls, deals and risk. Holder money (정재, 正財) is steady income and saving. Which one shows up in your chart shapes how you tend to earn and keep money.

Saju is the Korean system of reading your personality and timing from your birth year, month, day and hour, also known as the Four Pillars or BaZi. If you are new to it, start with our guide to what saju is. This post covers one slice of it, money, and gives you a table you can use for all ten types.

What is the wealth element in saju?

The wealth element is the element your saju type controls, and saju reads it as the money and results you go after. Your saju type, which saju experts call your Day Master, is the top character of your day pillar, the part of your chart that stands for you. There are ten types, and each belongs to one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal or water.

The five elements control each other in a fixed loop:

  • Wood controls earth (roots hold the soil).
  • Fire controls metal (heat melts metal).
  • Earth controls water (banks hold rivers).
  • Metal controls wood (an axe cuts a tree).
  • Water controls fire (water puts out fire).

So if your type is wood, your wealth element is earth. If you are water, your wealth element is fire. In Korean this group is called 재성 (jaeseong, 財星), "the wealth stars". "Control" here does not mean harm. It means the thing you can shape, manage and hold in your hands, which is why saju links it to money.

Not sure which type you are? Our guide to the Day Master explains how it is found, and you can browse all ten in the saju type guide.

What is the difference between trader and holder money?

Trader money, 편재 (pyeonjae, 偏財, "indirect wealth"), is wealth with the same yin or yang as you, and holder money, 정재 (jeongjae, 正財, "direct wealth"), is wealth with the opposite. Every element has a yang side (outgoing, big) and a yin side (inward, fine-grained), so each wealth element shows up in two forms.

Korean saju teachers explain the difference with a simple idea. Two things of the same polarity push against each other, so trader money moves: it comes in, goes out, and gets put to work. Two things of opposite polarity pull together, so holder money sticks: you feel attached to it and want to keep it.

This is where our trader and holder labels come from:

  • Trader (偏財): money from deals, side projects, sales, investing, business, windfalls. Comfortable with risk. Generous, sometimes too generous. Big ins and big outs.
  • Holder (正財): money from a salary, a steady client, rent, savings. Careful with risk. Tracks spending. Slow and reliable growth.

A common way Korean readers put it: 정재 is your monthly paycheck, 편재 is your business and your windfall. Neither is better. They are two different relationships with money.

Which saju money style goes with each saju type?

Each type has one wealth element and two possible wealth characters: one trader, one holder. The table shows both for all ten types.

Your saju typeYour yin/yangWealth elementTrader money (same yin/yang, 偏財)Holder money (different yin/yang, 正財)

How to use it: find your type in the first column. Then look at the other characters in your chart. If the trader character (or its element in the matching yin/yang) appears more, your money style leans trader. If the holder character appears more, you lean holder. Many charts have both, and some have neither.

How do you read it in a real chart?

You count where the wealth characters sit and how strong they are. Here is a made-up example to show the steps.

Imagine a chart with Ocean 壬 as the type. Ocean is yang water, so its wealth element is fire.

  • Step 1: find the two wealth characters. For Ocean, trader money is 丙 Sun (yang fire, same polarity) and holder money is 丁 Candlelight (yin fire, opposite polarity).
  • Step 2: look for them in the chart. Say this person has 丙 Sun on top of the month pillar and no 丁 Candlelight anywhere. The month pillar is the strongest spot in a chart after the type itself, because it sets the season you were born in.
  • Step 3: read the style. Sun in the month pillar points to a trader pattern. This person tends to earn best from things that move: commissions, freelance work, launching projects, buying and selling. The same chart also suggests money leaves as fast as it arrives, so a fixed savings habit helps.

Now change one thing. Put 丁 Candlelight in the month pillar instead. Ocean and Candlelight form one of saju's five classic combinations (丁壬), where two characters pull toward each other, the same pair covered in our post on water and fire compatibility. Korean readers often read this as someone who holds on tight to what they earn: a steady earner, careful saver, and not easily talked into a risky bet.

Same type, same wealth element, very different money habits. That is why the type alone is never the full answer.

What if your chart has no wealth element?

A chart with no visible wealth element is common and does not mean a life without money. It usually means money is not what drives you, and you tend to earn through skill, reputation or people rather than by chasing money directly.

Saju also has timing. Every chart moves through 10-year luck cycles (대운, daeun, 大運), which are decade-long periods that bring new elements into your life. When a cycle brings in your wealth element, money questions tend to come to the front: a new job, a business idea, a big purchase. Many people with no wealth in their birth chart have their busiest money years in those cycles.

Two other patterns readers look at:

  • Too much wealth, weak type. If the wealth element far outweighs your own element, the classic reading is "money you can see but cannot hold". The advice is to build your own base (skills, health, savings rules) before taking big risks.
  • Strong type, wealth present. This is the textbook "can carry what it earns" chart. Readers see it as someone who can handle a larger amount of risk.

Which Korean money customs come from saju?

Many Koreans check the wealth element before big money moves. It is common to hear people say a year "has 재물운 (財物運, money luck)" when a reading shows the wealth element arriving in the year or the current 10-year cycle. Others use the trader or holder frame for something more practical: deciding whether to keep a stable job or go freelance.

The useful part is the question the chart makes you ask: do I earn better by moving money or by keeping it?

Is trader money better than holder money?

No, they are two styles, not two levels. Trader money suits people who like deals and change, and holder money suits people who build slowly. Either one can build savings over time; they just build it differently.

Can my money style change over time?

Your birth chart stays the same, but your 10-year luck cycles and each year bring in new elements. A natural holder can go through a trader decade, and that is often when people change careers or start a business.

Do I need my birth time to see my wealth element?

Your type and wealth element come from your birth date alone. Your birth time adds the hour pillar, which can add or remove a wealth character, so it makes the trader or holder reading more precise.
